I was going to post this in the discussion forum; however, I wanted to also know how most people who do cheat, cheat. I just wanted to see how many people cheat. I do, if I get bored, but for me it takes the danger and fun out of the game.

The game would be boring to me if I turned on the cheat options but I guess it depends on how much time one has to spend. Someone who doesn't play much might want to cheat death, otherwise he might not ever get to win.

Doesn't asking this in the SPOILERS section mean that if you can read/respond to the poll mean you HAVE to be cheating?

Just my AUD$0.02...

No, it means Serin is paying attention to the fine points. Creating such a thread *could* potentially lead to followup posts on how cheating is done, so he/she did right.

Also, IMHO there is no necessary connection or implication between cheating and reading and/or posting on the spoilers forum.

Well, cheating isn't a spoiler.

I've just noticed that Serin is being extra-careful in his posts, coming to Spoilers when in the slightest of doubt.

I can't complain about that.

Wow, sorry for not saying enough times that I was being ironic and joking around.

Maybe my sense of humour isn't agreeing with everyone elses....

Kalon: I didn't realize you were exerting humor. No offense intended.

Heh, I got it, Kalon. You just gotta remember, other players are suffering from anxiety over the subversiveness of coming to the Spoilers forum. I mean, I'd never condescend to visit that tawdry place beca...looks around...anyway, spoilers don't make me a bad person. I can quit anytime I want. Honest.

Senses of humour are not allowed! Punishment will commence upon Melkor retrieving that whip he lent DarkGod.

I've died often enough in roguelike that I don't really get upset enough to cheat. I used to use explore mode in Nethack/SLASH'EM, but I found that for some reason I did much better without that on. Since then, I've never bothered in any roguelike.

I used savefile scumming with my first character in ToME and once I have used explore mode to map the world. Both of these cheats took so much away that I never again use any cheats.
Without these I'd still be a newbie while I now consider myself am experienced ToMEr.

you guys crack me up!
seriously though, that is why I posted what is a spoiler in the general discussion so that I didn't get into trouble with the powers that be.

I appreciate also the fact that people tell me that I am doing right.

BTW for any who care, I am a he, or a yeek, I haven't decided which.

(however my wife may have something to say about that....)

I do cheat, but not very much. I savefile scum to a limited extent. And I read spoilers and search the spoiler forum.

I used to make a backup copy at what I thought of as a decent start point (roughly, Clevel 20). But I didn't always use it when I died. Plus, I've since learned how to get up levels quickly, so it's now redundant.

Occasionally I'll still use a backup save to peek into what's ahead - for a given quest, can you back out without losing it? Can you back out at all? I think of this as like the spoilers you have when you're not on line and can't check the forums. The last time I did this was when I got my first ever death fate and I was curious. So I made a backup and went for a look to see what it was. Turned out to be a solitary ancient green dragon, so the backup was unnecessary. But I had plans to just die and restore if it was something like 60 greater balrogs...

erm, define cheating. I don't savescum to get specific FF rewards, and if I get caught stealing, I wait it out. But I DO keep track of what dungeon towns have good shops and recall to them after time passes to see what goodies they have. I also will worm harvest, especially blue worms if I am very low level.

For not cheating, I don't munchkin up levels quickly at the beginning with either swamp or dragon questing. Nor do I restart/kill if starting shop has no lamp/oil. But I WILL save up items for events my character could not possibly know, and otherwise act on previous knowledge.

So, shop inventory save scumming is cheating, yet town traveling to reset shop inventories isn't?

seems cheating can cover a whole list of actions, some legit some not...

The only time I cheated in a roguelike game was back in Moria 4.8.3. That was back in 1990 when I had my first (actually second since I played Rogue a few times) taste of a roguelike game. I had a friend who had played with the sourcecode of that game to make himself a maxed out killing machine with monster equipment (HA sword, Resistant Armor, Ring of Speed, boots of speed, etc.). He said they still couldn't kill the balrog! Well, that was like a challenge. From that point on, I played Moria for about 10 years (on and off) trying to get a character to the point where he could try to take on the big guy.

My theory was to save all my Healing, Invulnerability and Resistance potions and just try duking it out with the Balrog. Never got that far though.

The only cheating I did on that one, though, was to save a backup of my character file. I would reload a few times but only if it was a stupid death. Any death that happend from just plain being overmatched would be permanent.

I still haven't gotten past about level 35 in that game.
